Two kinds of tree call in Fremantle

Most calls fall into one of two shapes. The first has a deadline someone else set: a limb down across the driveway after a winter front off the Indian Ocean, a marri leaning further over the neighbour's carport every year, a palm frond that has landed on a parked car. Palms are a separate trade, not a smaller tree

More people find this site looking for palm work than anything else, so it is worth being clear about how it differs. A palm has a single growing point at the top of the trunk. Cut into it and the palm is finished, which is why palms are cleaned rather than pruned: dead fronds, spent flower spikes and seed heads come off, the living crown stays.

The three that turn up constantly in Fremantle backyards each behave differently. Cocos palms (Syagrus romanzoffiana) drop heavy seed heads that germinate in every garden bed within throwing distance and stain paving. Canary Island date palms (Phoenix canariensis) carry spines at the base of every frond that cause genuinely nasty infections if they go into a hand, and a mature crown weighs far more than it looks from the ground. What Fremantle ground does to the job

Fremantle sits on Tamala limestone with shallow sandy soil over the top. Root plates spread wide across the rock instead of driving down, which has two consequences: saturated winter sand plus a strong frontal wind is how established trees come over, and a stump grinder often finds limestone before it finds the bottom of the root plate. Check the rules before you book the truck

Both the City of Fremantle and the Town of East Fremantle regulate significant trees, and a tree on the register cannot simply be taken out because it is dropping leaves in the gutter. Verge trees belong to the council.
