Big trees standing over expensive ground
Attadale sits on the river between Bicton and Alfred Cove, on some of the largest residential blocks in the City of Melville. The gardens were planted generations ago and planted well: mature exotics alongside the natives, so a single back yard can hold a lemon-scented gum, a liquidambar, a jacaranda, a row of Canary Island date palms and a tuart that predates all of them.
What makes tree work here different is not the trees. It is everything sitting underneath them. Pools and coping, glazed extensions, tiled roofs, reticulated lawn, established garden beds, limestone retaining and paved entertaining areas that cost more per square metre than the removal itself. A tree that would take half a morning in a paddock takes a day here because nothing can be allowed to land anywhere unplanned.
Protection is the plan, not an afterthought
On these jobs the method statement is mostly about protection. Mats go down under anything a machine crosses so the lawn and the driveway survive it. Paving, coping and pool edges get boarded. Every section that comes off the tree is tied into a rigging line and lowered to a nominated landing area rather than dropped, and the timber is carried out along one agreed route rather than wherever is nearest.
It is worth being specific before you accept a quote. Agree where plant will stand, where the chipper parks, where rounds will be stacked and what is not to be walked on. When lifting beats lowering
Craning comes up here for the same reason it does across the river in Bicton, and the deciding factors are the same. It is not automatically the dearer option. Where sections are too heavy to rig from the tree, where the timber is too unsound to take a climber, or where the only ground route runs through the house, lifting whole pieces out over the roofline is both safer and quicker. What it needs is set-up room, firm level ground for outriggers and clear airspace, none of which can be assumed from a photo.
The exotics, and the honest answer
A good share of the removal enquiries out of Attadale do not need to end in a removal. Leaf drop into a pool, a path lifting, a crown that has leaned towards the light, limbs over a neighbour's roof: those are crown reduction and deadwooding problems. Where the decision is genuinely balanced, get the tree looked at first, because a mature specimen on a river block is worth real money to the property and cannot be put back.

Can a big old liquidambar or jacaranda be saved instead of removed?
Often, and it is worth asking. Many mature exotics here are removed for leaf drop, a lifting path or a lopsided crown, all of which have answers short of felling.
